Connaught 'A' v Wymondham Dell 'B' Home
Connaught "A" played Wymondham Dell "B" at home on Wednesday 18 July
in a "must win" match for both sides in the struggle against relegation.
Connaught came a distant second on a bad night, going down 42-75
and 0-5.
On Rink 1 Jim Ross, Darren Thurston, John Winup and Ivor Moore just
lost 17-18 against C Robinson after holding the lead from end 4 to
end 19. The Connaught players were not quite on top form, lacking
the collective solidity of recent matches, but for the most part
were just doing enough. Jim played a superlative draw on end 13 to
turn 6 down into 1 up and Ivor took the jack brilliantly on end 18
to give Connaught a 16-12 lead. A dropped 2 and fatally a 4 on successive
ends gave Wymondham a two-shot lead and Connaught could pull back
only one on the last end. Connaught were a little out of sorts, with
Darren suffering a back problem from an accident the night before.
Jim seemed on edge against his winter club and Ivor had one of those
over-loud nights.
On Rink 2 Terry Makings, George Sheridan, Mike Parsons and Lee Fallows
had a similar experience in going down 18-21 against M Gulliver. 9-4
up after eight ends, they had a bad spell to be 9-14 down after twelve
ends but pulled back well to lead 18-16 after eighteen ends but Wymondham
won the last three ends 2, 2 and 1. Connaught had won 12 of the 21
ends without ever scoring more than 2 shots on a single end; Wymondham
by contrast had 1 x 4 and 2 x 3.
On Rink 3 Bill Adcock, Peter Hambling, Keith Beavers and Ray Wells
dropped 5 on the first end and 5 on the last, a dreadful symmetry in
a defeat by 7-36 to J Hardy. The Connaught players confessed to having
been totally outbowled in match in which they were confined to 5 x
1 and 1 x 2. More often in bowls the pattern of a match changes a little
and the losing side has a goodish spell to achieve some respectability,
but this did not happen to Connaught. There is no point after a defeat
on this scale in blaming individuals; the opposition simply took over
and rightly were ruthless.
For a period in the match Connaught seemed on the way to a 2-3 but
for the second time this season Wymondham Dell held out better at the
end. The Dell side was much-changed from that which had beaten Connaught
earlier in the season; they were able to bring in young players down
from university and these have stiffened the side in a recent good
run.
Barring a statistical miracle, with everything going in favour, Connaught
are now relegated and must face another regrouping next season. In
a rather strange speech post-match the Dell captain, with the best
of intentions, spoke of "small clubs" like Connaught being the heart
and soul of the game. With 150+ members and bowls played all the year
round Connaught are not that small and EBA South 2 is not where they
should be.
CONNAUGHT "A" v WORTWELL HOME
Connaught "A" entertained Wortwell on Wednesday 25 July. With relegation
virtually assured for both sides, the match was something of a funeral
wake but in fact was hard-fought and close. Connaught won 58-48 and
3-2 to bring some satisfaction to the season by ensuring that the club
did not finish bottom.
On Rink 4 Jim Ross, Darren Thurston, John Winup and Ivor Moore maintained
their generally good form by winning 24-11 against P Ashfield. After
the early exchanges Connaught took a 3-2 lead on end 4 and never lost
the lead after that. Darren and John were steadier than their opposite
numbers on a generally difficult rink, drawing in pretty well and not
allowing Wortwell to dominate the head. At Jim"s bidding John also
played some powerful drives when it was necessary to break up the head.
Ivor was in buffoon mood with people he knew well, but to his credit
still concentrated and produced some telling shots on several ends.
Jim retained the priceless knack, oft referred to in these pages, of
succeeding with the pressure shot. All in all a good team effort; the
four were heartened when the other rinks fought back well from poor
starts and they battled hard to maintain a good shots difference.
On Rink 5 Terry Makings, Peter Hambling, George Sheridan and Bob Oatway
made a spirited recovery to just lose, 18-20, against Robert Hadingham.
Peter had turned up as reserve and replaced Lee Fallows, who sadly
failed to appear without advising anybody. Connaught struggled from
the start and after fourteen ends were 6-18 down; Robert Hadingham
is a class act and was responsible on several occasions for saving
his side or cutting down holding woods. The tide turned with 5 to Connaught
on end 15 followed by 2 x 2s; 15-18 and game on; the last four ends
were very close but Connaught just missed out. Peter, with no time
to brood, found his touch and had his best game of the season at
lead and George was very steady. Both newcomers to the side this season,
they have given lessons in commitment to more established players.
Bob coped well enough with the sudden move up to 3 and Terry held on
against Robert.
On Rink 6 Bill Adcock, Mike Parsons, Keith Beavers and Ray Wells started
badly against D Riches and were 4-13 down after twelve ends and 5-15
down after fifteen. They came back with a vengeance, scoring 3, 1,
2 and 4 on successive ends to draw level at 15-15. Like Terry"s rink,
however, they just failed to make it and went down 16-17. Bill reports
that the second half comeback was due mainly to Mike and Keith finding
the green much better and giving Connaught the advantage up front;
from that point he and Ray were no longer in firefighting mode and
were able to build up the heads.
Thus ends a bitterly disappointing EBA season for Connaught "A" and
the club will have to regroup next year in South 2. Too early to say
what regrouping will mean, but there are lessons to learn from this
year"s experience. Firstly, the team is old and people are succumbing
to illness and frailty; Ivor and Russell are cases in point. Secondly,
too many squad members did not give Mike the commitment necessary at
this level of team bowls; the extent of unexpected holiday-taking is
the main example. Thirdly, and flowing from the other points, continuity
in block selection was not possible. Jim Ross"s block was the most
successful by some way, but after Ivor"s early return from illness
was never disrupted. Bill Adcock and Terry Makings would have relished
such a position. Mike, a dedicated captain and club servant, is to
be thanked for his devotion to the cause and for staying upbeat through
it all.
Some time after the previous paragraph was written,
Connaught discovered that they had escaped relegation by a half
point! Amazingly Wymondham Dell 'B' lost their last two matches heavily,
0-5 to Dickleburgh and 1-4 to Norfolk BC, to give Connaught their escape
route. Rightly, there was mild pleasure and utter surprise rather than
wild euphoria on hearing the news. The previous paragraph still holds
good and next year will be bad if there are no changes in attitude
and no additions to the squad.

Connaught "B'
Stan Groom
Stan Groom takes on the 'B' team job for about the 5th
year on the trot as the team faces life once more in Central 3 following
a decisive relegation last year.
As always, Stan has engineered a quite sizeable squad
with little change from last year. Ty Musk has opted for reserve status
only for job reasons but Kevin Noble has made Connaught his prime club
this season and will be a very useful addition. Stan's problem will be
satisfying everybody in the squad whilst maintaining continuity in the
make-up of his blocks.
Connaught "B" v
Weeting Away
Connaught 'B' played their first match away to Weeting
on Wednesday 2 May losing narrowly by 51 shots to 58 and by 1.5 points
to 3.5.
Alan Sparrow (skip), Alan Evans (lead), Brian Cole (2)
and Gordon Wilcox (3) form a seasoned and solid block and started their
season with a good win by 21-15.
Alan Marshall (skip), John Askew (lead), Gary Goode (2)
and Kevin Noble (3) look a useful combination on paper although it is
a pity from a Connaught viewpoint that Gary is available only occasionally.
For much of the match Connaught held a good lead and were holding 5 on
end 20 when the Weeting skip, on his own admission, fired a speculative last
wood in desperation. The outcome was 1 shot to Weeting and the final
result was a draw 15-15. Bowls can produce those twists of fate and Connaught
almost certainly were deprived of a win overall.
Terry Dennis (skip), Ralf Ramm (lead), Stan Groom (2)
and Ken Ramsbottom (3) form a sometimes inconsistent block which has
its ups and downs. Weeting was a down night as they lost fairly heavily
15-28. Connaught were only 2 shots adrift starting end 17 but proceeded
to drop 7 and then go further downhill.
Connaught 'B' v Mattishall Away
Connaught 'B' played at Mattishall on Wednesday 16 May
and went down 48-55 and 1-4. Bare details only are available.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom
had a good win by 23-11. Alan Marshall, John Mitchell, Eric Sopp and
Ralf Ramm lost 17-19, Alan Sparrow, Alan Evans, Brian Cole and Gordon
Wilcox lost 8-25. Stan reports that Alan Sparrow's block had trouble
with the long jack.
Stan gave reserve players a chance in this match, notably
by including both John Mitchell and Eric Sopp in Alan Marshall's block.
They did not perform too badly but extra power and experience might well
have secured a vital win for Alan. Stan has decided now to stay with
regular blocks
Connaught
'B' v Mundford "B" Home
Connaught 'B' had their first win at home to Mundford
'B' on Wednesday 23 May; the score was 63-39 and 4-1.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom
won 22-13. Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Ty Musk and Kevin Noble won 22-7
(Mundford were deducted 3 shots for fielding only 3 players). Alan Sparrow,
Mick Utting, Ralf Ramm and Brian Cole lost 18-19 (on the last end).
This was a good win for Connaught 'B' and one hopes a
prelude to a successful run
Connaught
'B' v Feltwell "B" Away
Connaught 'B' then travelled to Feltwell 'B' on Wednesday
30 May only to lose a third away match by a narrow shots margin but by
a significant points margin. This time the scores were 54-60 and 1-4.
Ken Ramsbottom, Dick Newson, Barry Westwood and Stan
Groom lost 14-30. The level of defeat was disappointing because the scores
were level at 13-13 after thirteen ends. Stan had been on a Probus outing
to the coast that day and reports "I did not feel I bowled well tonight
as I was a bit wound up with a rush to get there in time; our coach outing
arrived back late!". That may be too self-critical - Ken reports that
the Feltwell lead had a superb game and once he set the long jack, after
realising that Dick could not reach it, Connaught were playing catch-up.
But Stan was off the pace a bit and perhaps he should have played
at 2. In Terry Dennis's absence that would have meant the same lead and
2 as the previous week; instead the block was changed in three positions.
Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Ralf Ramm and Kevin Noble
had a good win by 22-10. Alan and Ralf were very steady at lead
and 2 and Kevin played pretty well (although suffering from a severe
chill caused by playing in the rain at Watton the previous Sunday and
then drinking for three hours, still in wet clothes, in the Watton bar!).
Alan Marshall is a modest person and merely says that he had "quite a
good game". Other observers say he played brilliantly. Hindsight is a
wonderful thing, in the cliché, but Alan's form this season suggests
that the 'A' team have missed out.
Ty Musk, Mick Utting, Brian Cole and Gordon Wilcox lost
18-20 in the evening's close match. With different twists and turns this
match might have been won, with Connaught earning a 2-3 or even
a 3-2 or 4-1. It was not to be, but losing by two shots away from home
was no disgrace. Reports suggest that Mick Utting, a natural games player
just needing more bowls experience, is settling in to the lead's role.
One hopes that he gets an extended run (and perhaps that David Warne
and Richard Harrison, of similar younger age and ability, also get an
opportunity).
Connaught 'B' have not done too badly, considering they
have played three away matches out of four, and the points for tally
does not reflect the closeness of the matches.
Connaught 'B' v Hingham "B" Home
Connaught 'B' played Hingham 'B' at home on Wednesday
6 June and won by 79-53 and 5-0.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom
won 27-26. Alan Sparrow, Mick Utting, Barry Westwood and Gordon Wilcox
won 31-10. Alan Marshall, Richard Harrison, Ralf Ramm and Kevin Noble
won 21-17.
This was a heartening result after some close defeats.
Connaught 'B'
v Thetford "C" Home
Connaught 'B' played Thetford 'C' at home on Wednesday
13 June, and against a side yet to win a match went down 58-63 and
2-3.
On Rink 1 Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Ty Musk and Ken
Ramsbottom had a real nightmare and lost disastrously 9-34. Connaught
scored 3 on end 1, 5 on end 8 to pull up to 8-9, and a token 1 on end
16. Muted reports suggest that Dick had a reasonable game at lead, but
that the rest struggled; Terry in particular could find very little a
quite heavy green after recent rain.
On Rink 2 Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Ralf Ramm and Kevin
Noble played and scored consistently well to win by 31-14. Reports again
confirm the splendid form this season of Alan Marshall and the rest of
the block has a solid look to it. Gaining in confidence, Alan Evans is
a skilful player and Ralf Ramm concentrates hard. Ralf has also expanded
his game through skipping in the Ashill 'C'. Kevin Noble, although still
the butt of jokes about his "firing", has come on well this season with
much more familiarity of Connaught's rinks. He has learnt also to play
a more percentage game on the long EBA greens.
On Rink 3 Alan Sparrow, Brian Cole, Barry Westwood and Gordon
Wilcox just edged home 18-15 in a close one. They played steadily and
despite dropping a 5 on end 12 led 17-10 after sixteen ends. They fell
away a little after that but managed to hold on.
It is difficult for any side to make up for a 9-34 defeat
on one rink. Connaught nearly made it but what might have been a 1-4
became a 2-3
Connaught
"B" v Weeting Home
Connaught
"B" hosted Weeting on Wednesday 20 June and were pleased with a win by
60-50 and 4-1. No scorecard or other analysis is available.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom won 24-14
and doubtless will be relieved at putting last week"s nightmare behind
them.
Alan Sparrow, Brian Cole, Barry Westwood and Gordon Wilcox won 21-18.
Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Ralf Ramm and Kevin Noble lost 15-18.
Connaught 'B' started their match at home to Mattishall on Wednesday
4 July but a torrential downpour, flooding the green, caused abandonment
after three ends. The match will be rearranged.
CONNAUGHT
"B" v MUNDFORD "B" AWAY
Connaught
"B" beat Mundford "B" away on Wednesday 11 July by 58
shots to 56 and by 3.5 points to 1.5.
On Rink 3 Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom
won 21-17 in a match of three parts. Firstly, from ends 1 to 7, they
established a 9-3 lead. Then from ends 8 to 13 they wilted to fall
behind 10-14. After that they took control again.
On Rink 4 Alan Sparrow, Brian Cole, Barry Westwood and Gordon Wilcox
lost 21-23 in a close match.
Connaught
in fact won 12 of the 21 ends but dropped 4s on ends 11, 16 and 18
proved very costly.
On Rink 5 Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Ralf Ramm and
Kevin Noble were 3-8 down after eight ends but 14-9 ahead after fourteen
ends and then 14-15 after eighteen. Two single shot wins gave them
a 16-15 lead but Mundford took 1 on the last end to draw the match.
CONNAUGHT
"B" v FELTWELL "B" HOME
Connaught
"B" lost at home to Feltwell "B" on Monday 16 July by 5-67 and 1-4.
On Rink 4 Alan Sparrow, Brian Cole, Barry Westwood and Gordon Wilcox
lost 11-24. The scorecard makes sorry reading because Connaught won
only four ends; fortunately these included a 4 on end 3 and a 5 on
end 14 otherwise the deficit might have been catastrophic. Feltwell
scored steadily and it is interesting that they won twelve ends by
a single shot; read into that what you will.
On Rink 5 Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Mick Utting and Kevin Noble lost
15-20 in a match which was tight for much of its duration. The score
was 12-12 after fourteen ends but Feltwell pulled
away over the next four ends and
Connaught
were 12-19 down. They came back a little but could not recover enough
ground.
On Rink 6 Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Gary Goode and Ken Ramsbottom
won an extraordinary match by 24-23.
Connaught
seemed down and out at 1-12 after six ends, including a dropped 6 on
end 5. However, a 6 on end 7 and a 5 on end 8 brought them level
12-12! After that the match achieved some normality but with Feltwell
just having the edge and with
Connaught
20-23 down after twenty ends. Incredulity returned as
Connaught
scored 4 on the last end to win the match
CONNAUGHT "B" v HINGHAM "B" AWAY
Connaught travelled to neighbours Hingham on Wednesday and after a
close match went down 65-67 and 1-4.
Alan Sparrow, Brian Cole, Barry Westwood and
Gordon Wilcox went down 21-27 against M Bye in a match with one
of the most extraordinary scorecards of the season. Connaught started
well to lead 11-1 after five ends. They then stuttered a bit and led
by only 12-10 after eleven ends. Despite a dropped 4 on end 15 they
got on top again to lead 21-14 after eighteen ends. 6, 5 and 2 were
then dropped in succession to give Hingham an unlikely victory. How
or why all this happened is not available!
Alan Marshall, Alan Evans, Eric Sopp and Kevin Noble won 25-17 against
K Dodsworth. Connaught had a shaky start and were 6-13 down after eight
ends, having dropped 1 x 4 and 3 x 3. From that point on they dominated
totally, winning nine of the remaining ends and conceding only four
shots. Reports suggest that Alan Marshall had another very good match.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom lost 19-23
to A Harvey in a match with a rather more orthodox scorecard. A 4 to
Hingham on end 2 was offset by 5 to Connaught on end 3 and thereafter
the game was nip and tuck but with Hingham having slightly the better
of it. After fifteen ends Connaught were 12-19 down but had a good
spell to pull up to 19-19 after nineteen ends. They could not sustain
the pressure and dropped 2 x 2 over the last two ends.
CONNAUGHT "B" v MATTISHALL
HOME
Connaught played Mattishall at home on Monday 23 July. In fact this
was a resumption of the match rained off earlier in the season after
three ends or so had been played. Connaught lost 53-61 and 1-4 to the
league leaders in yet another of those narrow but fatal defeats which
have characterised their season. ONLY BARE DETAILS ARE AVAILABLE OF
THE INDIVIDUAL MATCHES.
Terry Dennis lost 14-27, Alan Marshall won 24-15, Gordon Wilcox lost
15-19. The pattern continued of a largeish defeat, a good win and a
narrow defeat. Three successive 1-4 defeats have shattered the Connaught "B" season
and a bottom three finish now seems likely.
CONNAUGHT "B" v THETFORD "C'
AWAY
Connaught travelled to bottom of the table Thetford " C" on Wednesday
25 July and went down 49-69 and 0.5 to 4.5 to complete a run of heavy
defeats and to finish the season on a rather depressing note.
Terry Dennis, Dick Newson, Stan Groom and Ken Ramsbottom drew 24-24
in a match with one of those extraordinary scorecards. 4-0 up after
two ends Connaught then dropped 2 and 4 to go 4-6 down. Thereafter
they dominated to lead 15-6 after nine ends and scored 5 on end 7.
Thetford came back with 5 on end 10 and it was their turn to dominate
as Connaught found themselves 15-22 down after sixteen ends. Connaught
were not done yet and with the help of another 5, on end 18, managed
to force the draw; they still needed 2 on end 20 and 1 on end 21. Stan
and Ken reported on return to the club that Dick Newson was a focal
point. Thetford noted his weakness with the long jack whereas Connaught
put it short on their turn!
Alan Sparrow, Eric Sopp, Gordon Wilcox and Barry Westwood went down
heavily by 11-27. The scorecard here tells a consistent story of Thetford
dominance, with Connaught winning only seven ends. A 2 on end 13 and
a 3 on end 14 had given them a glimmer of hope and a score of 9-15,
but they then faded badly. Why was Gordon moved to 2 and Barry to 3?
Alan Marshall, Mick Utting, Ralf Ramm and Kevin Noble went behind on
the first end and Thetford held the lead thereafter. However, the match
was a close affair with a final score of 14-18 and both sides obviously
contained well throughout. Kevin, the club"s main bowls analyst (after
the website reporter), has been singing Alan Marshall"s praises all
season but reported on return that Alan had an off-night by his standards.
Nevertheless, for Connaught EBA "B" and for Connaught "D" in the Ashill
League, Alan has had a super season.
Connaught "B" thus finished their season on a low note and in a lowly
position. For a time they had a good run, which if maintained might
have given them a promotion chance but which fizzled out. The ailments
afflicting Connaught "A" all too clearly afflict Connaught "B" as well.
Kevin Noble, 50 this year, is by some way the baby of the side and
an ageing team is not going to improve. Commitment was not too bad
and the side will probably hang on in for a season or two yet. Younger
blood, which can force its way in time into the "A" team, is still
desperately needed. Stan, ably assisted by Ken Ramsbottom, put in another
year"s sterling service. Thought was given to block selection and reasonable
continuity was maintained.

National Top Club Competition
Connaught were drawn at home against neighbours Hingham
in the first county round, the match being played on Friday 4 May. In
what was a bad week overall for the Club, Connaught lost 4 out of the
5 disciplines.
A bright spot came in the Two-Wood Singles, where relative
newcomer Peter Hambling paid back the faith placed in him by winning
comfortably 19-6 against K Jenkins. The match was conceded after 16 of
the 18 ends as Peter maintained concentration to the end. He had drawn
in splendidly throughout the match and had spotted that his opponent
was uncomfortable with the long jack.
In the Four-Wood Singles Derek Liles lost 12-21 against
M Shingfield. 1-5 down after four ends Derek fought back to level the
match 7-7 after 10 ends but then lost his way a bit against a more experienced
opponent to win only two more ends.
In the Pairs Bob Oatway (skip) and Mike Parsons lost 14-24
against D Sherman and G Higgs. Connaught had a reasonable start but fell
behind steadily in the middle and closing stages. Mike was steady enough
at lead but Bob had trouble with pace, being generally too long.
The triples was a disappointment for Connaught (Jim Ross
at skip, Darren Thurston (lead) and John Winup (2)), who lost 17-20
in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory against D Dodman, G
Hobart and T Cocks. 3-1 up after four ends Connaught dropped 5 and then
3 to be 3 -9 down. A good recovery saw them lead 10-9 after nine ends
and the match then poised at 11-12 after thirteen ends. A 5 on end 14
and a 16-12 lead should have been enough for Connaught to clinch it.
However, a decision to cast the jack longer cost them 4 shots on end
15 after which 2 successive 2s were dropped. As skip Jim Ross was pleased
with the overall play of his triple. Darren generally drew well, although
prone to the occasional short end, and John obeyed instructions to be
positive with pace; Jim had a very useful game but sometimes was
too narrow on the forehand side in an effort to find pace. The Hingham
2 and especially the skip did have excellent games to take their side
through.
The fours saw Bill Adcock (skip), Keith Banks (lead), Lee
Fallows (2) and Ray Wells (3) pitted against B Moody, P Hunter,
N Rollo and D Precious. Connaught's start was dreadful, 1-7 down after
5 ends and 2-10 down after 9 ends. The game then changed as Connaught
took 5 on end 10, followed by a 1 and a 2, and levelled the match 10-10
after 12 ends. The momentum was lost, however, as Hingham won four successive
ends to put Connaught 10-16 down after 16 ends. The home side fought
back well, but the capable Hingham block contained them to four successive
single shot ends. Connaught lost 14-16. Generally Connaught played
OK, but Lee took some time to find rhythm in his first game of the season
(not even a practice session due to work pressures) and Ray is struggling
a little at 3 so far. Keith was steady and Bill was again in good form.
This was a good win for Hingham on Connaught territory.
Not much in it but they did have the edge in general nous and experience.
Also they had two or three very good players at this level. Different
permutations were possible with the 11 Connaught players available but
in all honesty these would not have changed the result overall.
Fermoy Cup Match Reports
Connaught 'B' found themselves drawn against Downham Market 'B'
in the first round of the Fermoy Cup and played their matches on Thursday
3 May. Downham Market are one of Norfolk's strongest clubs, with the
'A' side in the Premier Zone and the 'B' side in West 1 (there is also
a 'C' side in West 3). A difficult night was in prospect for Connaught's
two rinks and thus it proved.
At home Alan Marshall skipped Ralf Ramm (lead), Gary Goode
(2) and Kevin Noble (3) against a four skipped by D Coates. The Downham
players read Rink 6 very quickly and easily and had the ability to bowl
to it; they soon established a healthy lead of 10-0 after three ends.
Connaught came back a little on occasion but could do nothing to
contain a remorseless slaughter ending after 22 ends (the extra end had
to be played!) in almost total darkness and miserably cold weather. The
score was 8-39 after 21 ends and Downham won the extra end to make
the score 8-40. The Connaught spectators, and indeed their players, settled
for admiring the skill of four players who on that form surely would
have beaten any Connaught 'A' four (but all the same that has
to be conjecture). They drew precisely and built up impenetrable heads;
any hint of trouble and a holding Connaught wood was usually despatched
to the nether regions of the green. The skip, in particular, was a class
player. For Connaught the problems started at lead, where Ralf had a
respectable game by his own standards but usually bowled too long; his
opponent had no trouble outdrawing anything two feet or more from the
jack. Gary and Kevin always bowled under pressure and likewise had opposition
too skilful for them. Both Connaught players tried pace to
break up the head and occasionally produced a spectacular shot, but the
odds were against them. Alan had a slightly bemused air as he took his
turn often several down; occasionally he saved well but was outgunned.
Connaught might have done better with Alan drawing in lower down the
order and either Gary or Kevin using pace at skip; but that is academic.
The Downham players knew they were having an easy ride, but were modest
and good-natured about it and good company on and off the green.
They were also complimentary about the club's facilities.
Stan Groom and Co (names and playing order will be completed
later) had a very similar experience in the away leg, where the margin
of defeat was something in the order of 12-38. Stan reports that Connaught
did hold their own for ten ends before subsiding and losing all the remaining
ends. Even Stan was philosophical and not suicidal about the margin of
defeat; they were beaten by a better four. Apparently Downham 'B' are
human, however, having lost all three matches in their EBA fixture the
previous evening; the West Zone seems quite strong. Stan also reports
a good-humoured match and pleasant company.
Connaught 'A' played in the Fermoy Cup against Long Stratton
and lost by 40 shots to 43 to a side one division below them in the EBA
county league. The home four (Bill Adcock (skip),Terry Makings, Mike
Parsons and Derek Liles ) had a sound enough win by 28-17 although Bill
reports a shaky personal game. The away four (Jim Ross (skip), Darren
Thurston, John Winup and Ivor Moore) lost badly by 12-26 to an aggressive
four skipped by Tony Cleverly. The green was heavy and Long Stratton
played it better throughout. Darren and John had poor matches, with Darren
too often too short and John's game deconstructing in the heavy conditions.
An away national singles in the afternoon on the very fast Thetford
green, admittedly arranged a long time back, left him ill-equipped for
the evening match. Ivor had some good shots but visibly tired. Jim was
patchy but had little support. Connaught had one good spell, pulling
up from 4-15 after 10 ends to 11-15 after 13, but two dreadfully short
woods from Darren on end 14 showed lack of concentration and the four
wilted. The disintegration from then on is best not described!

Bales Cup
After their league drubbing the previous evening at Swardeston,
Connaught played County Arts at home in a first round Bales Cup match
on Thursday 10 May. The Premier Zone side took no chances against a Division
1 side and brought a very strong team to Attleborough. Connaught's miserable
week continued as they went down 39-82 to opposition which simply
out-gunned them.
On Rink 1 Bob Oatway, Peter Hambling, Derek Liles and Ken
Ramsbottom played respectably in losing 13-24 to Brian Taylor's four.
At 9-11 after eleven ends they were well in the match, but as so often
happens against good-quality opposition they could not withstand the
constant pressure. County Arts doubled their score over five ends and
at 16 ends Connaught were 9-22 down. Ken Ramsbottom, playing against
his old club, was the experienced player in the Connaught side and reports
that tactically the block has much to learn. For example, sides like
County Arts always give the jack away but Connaught did not take advantage.
Long jacks were set for too much of the time, although Connaught had
played well to a shorter length.
On Rink 2 Jim Ross, Darren Thurston, John Winup and Mike
Parsons lost 9-32 to Phillip Barr's block in a comprehensive defeat.
At 5-7 down after eight ends, of which they had won five, Connaught were
containing well but subsided badly from then on; they were 5-26 down
after sixteen ends. Darren had another good game and John held his own
for about threre quarters of the match until his opposite number "found
it". Mike had good shots but again generally was too short. Jim had another
bad match, could not find his draw and was facing a class player
in brilliant form. Jim found his touch towards the end but by then the
rub of the green was always against him.
On Rink 3 Bill Adcock, Keith Banks, George Sheridan and
Ray Wells found themselves 3-17 down after eight ends against R Mitcham
and total disaster was facing them. However, with Bill and George playing
particularly well, they got the act togther and pulled up to 15-19 after
fifteen ends. They could not sustain it but a final score of 17-26 was
a good outcome after that start.
Connaught teams in recent years have played well against
Premier Zone sides and the club had hoped to be more competitive than
they were against County Arts. It was not to be and improvement in the
league has to be the target.

Men's National And County Championships
A men's four kicked off on Tuesday 1 May when Jim Ross
(skip), Mike Parsons (lead), John Winup (2) and Terry Makings (3 and
substituting for the stricken Ivor Moore) entertained a four from Thetford
skipped by Malcolm Struthers. An absorbing contest ensued on Rink 4,
going across the clubhouse. Each end saw very good heads but gradually
Thetford edged ahead, with good play from John Gardiner at 2 largely
being responsible, and Connaught were 4-12 down after thirteen ends and
seemingly on the way out. However, they came back well to be only 11-12
down after eighteen ends and 13-14 down after 20. End 21, with a long
jack being moved, saw some good play but with Thetford holding 1 shot
to win. All eight players performed very well, and despite losing the
Connaught block were happy to have held their own in strong company.
On Friday 11 May Jim Ross, Mike Parsons (subbing for the recovering
Ivor Moore) and John Winup played at home against a Thetford triple skipped
by John Gardner in a first round match. The Connaught players were "up
for it"; all three had played together the two previous evenings in losing
fours. None of them had distinguished himself and there was a grim determination
about them. They played very well to win 22-10 in heavy conditions, Thetford
conceding after 16 ends. Mike and John gave Jim a good platform and Jim
at last found his form. John Gardner played some superb backhand saving
shots but his triple were always up against it.
On the same evening Bill Adcock skipped Keith Banks and
Ray Wells against Alan Blakey's block at East Harling and the Connaught
triple played very well to win 22-5. Bill has had a good start to the
season and on this occasion Keith and Ray joined in!
On Monday 14 May Jim Ross played a first round singles
against Alan Byford from Thetford in the National Over-55. Alan had beaten
Jim previously in singles matches but could not get into this one. Jim
really found form in heavy conditions to win 22-4. A week earlier he
had beaten a Hingham opponent at home in the Champion of Champions.
On Thursday 17 May Alan Marshall and John Winup narrowly
lost a National Over-55 Pairs, 20-22, at home to a Thetford pair skipped
by Peter Scott. 2-13 down after ten ends or so to a pair skilful with
a short jack, Connaught came back well (on a long jack!) to 13-14. Dropping
1 and, fatally, 6 then put them 13-21 behind. Another good recovery was
not quite enough. In the same competition Jim Ross and Mike Parsons played
at home on Friday 18 May against yet another Thetford pair, led
by Len Robinson. Full details are not available, but the Connaught pair
played very well to win quite comfortably.
On Friday 25 May Jim Ross lost at home by 2 shots to a
Hunstanton opponent in the Champion of Champions. Two triples travelled
to Thetford on the same evening for second round county championship
matches. Bill Adcock, Russell Hales and Ray Wells lost 10-22 and Terry
Makings (deputising for the double-booked Jim Ross), Mike Parsons and
John Winup lost 11-22. The green provided a fast and true playing surface
and the Connaught triples actually played quite well despite the results.
Both home triples played superbly well, however, and deserved their victories.
Only bare details are available of other matches played
in May and June. Jim Ross had a good win at home in the National
Over-55 when beating a Premier Zone player from Downham Market. On Monday
4 June Jim reverted to his favourite position of lead, with Ivor Moore
skipping, when winning 21-13 against a Thetford pair skipped by Peter
Scott. (In a pairs and even a triples, Jim's ability at lead will win
matches up front. Unfortunately in EBA Fours Connaught do not now have
the back-up to move Jim to lead). On the adjoining rink Mike Parsons
and John Winup lost by a similar margin to a good Diss pair skipped by
Eric Rawsthorne, but made a fight of it.
In the County Singles on 5 June John Winup conceded
home advantage, to allow both home Ashill League matches to go ahead
in the evening, and travelled to Wortwell to face Robert Hadingham. He
played his best bowls of the season against a good player and was well
in touch at 15-16 before succumbing 16-21 after a succession of tight
ends in the closing stages. In contrast Jim Ross had a miserable match
in the afternoon, losing by some margin at home to Len Robinson of Thetford,
an opponent he had beaten before.
Jim Ross and Ivor Moore continued their good form in the
National Over-55 Pairs with a fairly comfortable win at home to Wymondham
Dell opposition on 14 June. After another victory Jim and Ivor had "won" Norfolk
to reach the zonal semi-final at Ipswich on Sunday 15 July. Unfortunately
they lost by 7 shots to the home pair

LADIES OUTDOOR BOWLS (EXTERNAL LEAGUES & COMPETITIONS)
2006
Breckland League
Sylvia Parsons captains a side virtually unchanged
from last year. At full strength the side will be useful enough. Sylvia
and Sheila Bragg are women skips equal to most in the county but have
never bothered with the "county badge" scene and remain unrecognised.
There is good back-up in Chris Taylor and Carol Tipton. The leads are
useful although 2 can be a bit problematical. The dangers are illness,
injury and holidays because the reserve strength is not really there.
Connaught Ladies v Mundford
Away
Connaught travelled to Mundford for the first match on Monday 14 June
and lost 43-58 and 2-6 in a bad start.
Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks won 19-16.
4-8 down after eight ends they recovered steadily to be level, 11-11,
after thirteen ends. A 6 on end 14 gave them a useful margin as they
held on well.
Chris Taylor, Mary Fallows and Vera Moore lost 12-18
after a match in which they were behind from the first end. They did
contain the score well.
Alison Rush, Margaret Goode and Heather Winup lost 12-24.
5-0 up after two ends, they promptly dropped 3 and then 5 but at 9-10
after seven ends were well in the match. The scorecard shows something
like disintegration from that point on as they lost end after end, albeit
most of them by a single shot. The Mundford skip apparently disrupted
several good Connaught positions.
The absence of Sheila Bragg and Carol Tipton was too
much for Connaught on the night; undoubtedly they would have made a difference.
Connaught Ladies
v Swaffham Home
At home to Swaffham on Monday 4 June Connaught had another
disappointing defeat, albeit to a competent side, by 44-59 and 2-6.
Chris Taylor, Mary Fallows and Vera Moore lost 10-24
to M Garrod and were only in the match up to four ends when they led
4-2. 1 x 5 and 3 x 3 tell their own story as Swaffham piled up the shots.
A defeat like this - and we have all had them - shows that a match is
lost collectively, up front, by the 2 and by the skip.
Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks lost 14-18 to
J Frowhawk. At 2-2 after four ends the match was tight but two successive
3s gave Swaffham an advantage they never surrendered. Connaught were
4-12 down at the halfway point but came back well enough to reduce
the losing margin to 4 shots. Sylvia played in this match and will know
if and where things particularly went adrift.
Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carol Tipton formed
on paper a strong-looking combination but had a hard struggle before
coming through by 20-17 against E Davidson. The scorecard shows no real
pattern to the match. With 4, 2 and 3 Connaught stormed ahead to lead
9-0 after three ends, but winning six ends by 2 shots Swaffham chipped
away steadily and after 14 ends Connaught were 11-15 down. A 3 and then
a 5 to Connaught changed things dramatically and there was no real chance
after that for Swaffham to come back.
Connaught Ladies have lost their first two matches, with
slightly different sides, by very similar margins. In each there was
one narrow win, one narrow defeat and one hammering. How to reshuffle
what is not the strongest of packs at present gives Sylvia one or two
problems.
Connaught
Ladies v Watton Away
Connaught Ladies travelled to Watton on Monday 11
June and came back with a solid win by 59-40 and 6-2. Watton had changed
the usual direction of play and the rinks were described as "very difficult".
Fortunately for Connaught this seemed to affect the home team more.
Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Joanna Barnes (playing
her first league match in place of the unavailable Carol Tipton) lost
12-20.
Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Alison Rush had a good
win by 24-9.
Vera Moore, Heather Winup and Chris Taylor won 23-11,
coming through strongly after falling behind at the start.
Sylvia had made some changes, enforced and otherwise.
It is too difficult to say whether these made any real difference but
nobody seems to have let the team down; at least there is some depth
at a basic playing level.
The match at Thetford on 18 June was rained off and will
be rearranged
Connaught
Ladies v Wymondham Dell Home
Connaught Ladies played Wymondham Dell at home
on Monday 25 June and lost by 38-51 and 0-8
On Rink 4 Vera Moore, Mary Fallows and Chris Taylor lost
16-20. After a tight start a dropped 6 on end 7 put Connaught 4-10
down and the next seven ends saw the deficit increase to 7-20 after fourteen
ends. A good recovery took place over the last four ends to bring the
final score to respectability.
On Rink 5 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks
lost 9-17. At 6-7 after nine ends Connaught were well in the match
and at 9-12 after sixteen ends were still in with a shout. Five
shots dropped over the last two ends then put paid to their chances.
On Rink 6 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carol Tipton
led 8-7 after eleven ends in an extremely tight match but then dropped
5 to go down 8-12. A recovery over the last six ends took them to 13-14.
All in all an unwelcome defeat against local rivals.
Connaught Ladies
v Ashill Home
Connaught Ladies bounced back from the previous week's
drubbing with a big win at home to Ashill on Monday 2 July by 60-20 and
8-0. The margin was particularly emphatic because heavy rain reduced
the match to one of 12 ends.
On Rink 2 Vera Moore, Joanna Barnes and Heather Winup
won 18-6 against C Bailey. A 7 on end 6 gave them an 11-3 cushion and
they consolidated well, dropping just 3 shots on end 11. Joanna drew
in very accurately, Heather put in back woods and Vera had a good, solid
match at skip.
On Rink 3 Carol Tipton (skipping in Sheila Bragg's absence),
Margaret Goode and Carole Beavers won 17-11 in a tighter match against
M Kiddle. Ashill did win six of the twelve ends but a run of 5, 3 and
3 on ends 6-8 gave Connaught a useful margin of 11-5 and they maintained
it.
On Rink 5 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks
won by a massive 25-3 against J Taylor. 8 shots on end 5 moved them into
an 11-1 lead and they consolidated relentlessly after that.
Connaught did well to maintain concentration in the bad
conditions in a match obviously going their way. Ashill had a bad night
and probably lack some depth at present
Connaught Ladies
v Mundford Home
Connaught played Mundford at home on Monday 9 July and
battled their way through a tough match to win 57-56 and 6-2. The match
was exciting throughout as Connaught had to stay on top in two fairly
close contests while the losing triple had to contain the points
deficit. Spectators were in agonies as the mathematics unfolded and as
Chris Taylor's match saw some utterly crazy ends!
On Rink 4 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carol Tipton
came good in the closing stages to win 19-11. Connaught had an early
edge to lead 10-5 after eleven ends but a dropped 4 on end 12 forced
them into a close match. At 11-10 after 14 ends it was anybody's match
but two successive 3s put Connaught in the driving seat and 2 shots on
the last end proved vital overall. This triple has a solid look about
it but can improve front end. Margaret is a generally very good lead
but goes haywire from time to time - as happened with the dropped 4.
Carol remains cool and steady at 2 and Sheila wins many more close finishes
than she loses. In the closing stages of this match she had the nerve
to take the jack on at least three occasions when Connaught were shots
down.
On Rink 5 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Carole Beavers
won 20-15 in a match largely dominated by Connaught despite a poor start
and nervous finish. 0-6 down after three ends Connaught asserted themselves
to lead 19-10 after sixteen ends. A dropped 5 on end 17 then set everybody
fluttering because the overall shots advantage was obliterated; the single
shot gained on the last end did come as a relief. Again this looks a
well-balanced triple on paper, with Diana a very competent lead, Carole
a talented player and Sylvia providing a will to win equalling Sheila's.
As Sylvia observed, Carole does need to slow down a bit. Carole will
never be as serious about bowls as the rest of the side but she does
have the ability.
On Rink 6 Chris Taylor, Mary Fallows and Heather Winup
went down 18-30 in a match best described as "bizarre". The match was
in the distant horizon for conservatory spectators; not close at hand
they could see no pattern or logic to it! Connaught were 0-8 down after
five ends and 1-14 down after eight ends. Mundford clearly were a steady
and competent triple but they then lost it as Connaught scored 2, 3 and
6 to be only 11-14 behind after eleven ends. Connaught retreated as Mundford
scored 2, 1 and 6 to put Connaught 11-23. Another 6 to Connaught on end
15 made the score 17-23. Believe it or not Connaught then dropped another
6 to go 17-29 down! More normal exchanges saw single shots to each side,
with Connaught's 1 on end 18 being significant. Mary and her opposite
number had very good orthodox games. Heather at 2 got some in the head
but more often thundered through; at lead she can draw very well
but at 2 lacks judgement. Chris's game simply is not what it was; the
power is not controlled and the overall steadiness has gone.
This remained a good win against one of the stronger
sides and avenged the opening defeat. Interesting to see the side in
action. Essential to keep two strong blocks together all the time and
limit damage with the other.
CONNAUGHT LADIES v SWAFFHAM AWAY
Connaught travelled to Swaffham on Monday 23 July to play a match in
rather wet and gloomy conditions. Connaught drew 51-51 on shots but went
down 3-5 on points.
Vera Moore, Mary Fallows and Carole Beavers lost 18-20 but recovered
well from 8-20 down.
Sylvia Parsons, Hazel Banks and Joanna Barnes had a good win by 19-15
with Joanna fitting in well at 2.
Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carol Tipton lost 14-16 in another
close one.
Swaffham are a form side this year and are chasing Thetford at the top
of the table. Sylvia reports some satisfaction with a Connaught performance
which surprised an opposition expecting a better result.
CONNAUGHT LADIES
v THETFORD
In a patchy season Connaught defied the bookies by pulling off an unexpected
win at Thetford on Friday 27 July by 47-39 and 6-2.
Vera Moore, Mary Fallows and Chris Taylor lost only five ends in beating
T Scott 15-8 in a low-scoring match.
Sheila Bragg, Heather Winup and Carol Tipton lost 14-18 to P Struthers,
having pulled up from a deficit of 8-16 after thirteen ends.
Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks beat V Gibson 18-13. The
sides each won nine ends but Connaught scored more heavily, with the
help of 2 x 4 and 1 x 3.
This was an excellent result, making a nonsense of some of the defeats
this season.
CONNAUGHT LADIES v WATTON HOME
After the good win at Thetford Connaught reverted to their inconsistent
selves at home to Watton on Monday 30 July. Connaught drew 42-42 on shots
but just managed to win on points by 5-3.
On Rink 4 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Chris Taylor lost to D Learmont
by 10-18. This score in fact represented a recovery, because Connaught
were 2-16 down after thirteen ends. Frankly the Connaught players had
an old-fashioned stinker of a match, with Margaret and Chris unable to
challenge for the head and Sheila strangely listless and almost uninterested.
On Rink 5 Sylvia Parsons, Hazel Banks and Joanna Barnes snatched a 2
on the last end to just win, 15-14, against J Selsby. Connaught won only
seven of the ends, but scored quite well on these while containing their
opponents. Hazel was not quite on song but still managed some accurate
draws. Joanna was too heavy for much of the match but came good on one
or two crucial ends. New to outdoor bowls this season, she has an excellent
bowling action but perhaps needs to try heavier woods if she is to play
at 2. Sylvia was disconcerted by an opponent who several times took the
jack to demolish good Connaught positions. She still bowled well under
pressure and did enough to secure a nervous win (13-8 up after thirteen
ends but 13-14 down after seventeen!)
Vera Moore, Mary Fallows and Carole Beavers won 17-10 against S Hubble.
6-0 up after three ends, Connaught then conceded five successive single-shot
ends. They stormed away again to lead 16-5 after fourteen ends but Watton
came back at them and in the context of the match overall earned their
side a valuable point. Watton won half the ends in this match but could
not score heavily against a competent-looking triple.
Watton are not having a good season, with reportedly some trouble in
the camp and some defections to other clubs. They still fought with spirit
and amazingly won 33 of the 54 ends played. Not on top form, Connaught
still played steadily and took chances when they had them.
CONNAUGHT LADIES v THETFORD LADIES
@ HOME
Connaught Ladies played Thetford at home on Monday 6 August and went
down by 40-58 and 2-6 in a reversal of their recent good win at Thetford.
On Rink 1 Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carole Beavers won 18-15 against
G Holbrook after a tense struggle. 4-4 after five ends. Connaught then
dropped 5. They caught up to make the score 9-10 after nine ends but
were 9-14 down after eleven ends. Connaught then won five successive
ends each by a single shot but dropped behind, 14-15, with one end to
go. All went well as they scored a convincing 4.
On Rink 2 Vera Moore, Mary Fallows and Chris Taylor were annihilated
9-22 by T Scott. A 4 on end 10 pulled Connaught back to 7-12 after an
appalling start but Thetford then allowed them very little. Connaught
had won just five ends in a match best forgotten by the home triple.
On Rink 3 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Hazel Banks went down 13-21
to P Struthers. 8-2 up after four ends, Connaught dropped 5 to put themselves
in a close match. At 10-10 after nine ends they were still in it but
sadly disintegrated in the second half. All three players had some good
shots but they were inconsistent on a rink which they found quite tricky.
Thetford played better as a unit and built the head more capably.
Connaught and Thetford matches usually have some edge to them but the
Connaught Ladies seemed rather listless. Thetford were more up for it
but were still not their usual aggressive selves. The match had a distinct
end of season feel to it!
CONNAUGHT LADIES V WYMONDHAM
DELL
Connaught Ladies travelled to Wymondham Dell on Monday 13 August on top
of a disappointing performance at home to Thetford and with memories
of the 0-8 stuffing at home to the Dell earlier in the season. With Sylvia
ringing a few more changes the side perhaps travelled more in hope than
expectation but pulled off the most stunning of victories by 73-27 and
8-0.
On Rink 3 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Vera Moore won 32-6 against
J Gray in a match which they dominated from start to finish. Three opening
single shot ends were followed by 6 on end 4 and 4 on end 5 and the score
mounted to 23-0 after ten ends and 31-2 after fifteen ends. All players
did extremely well throughout.
On Rink 4 Sheila Bragg, Hazel Banks and Carol Tipton got on top in the
early stages against M Harvey to lead 8-0 after six ends. Wymondham came
back well and Connaught led only 9-8 after twelve ends. At 11-11 after
fifteen ends the match could have gone either way but 1, 2 and 2 to Connaught
in the home straight sealed a win by 16-11.
On Rink 5 Carol Beavers, promoted to skip, Joanna Barnes and Heather
Winup won 25-10 against S Flood. An experimental triple, the Connaught
players were at best expected to keep things tight and things went according
to plan with the scores level 7-7 after nine ends. Connaught then exploded
with 4,2, 6 and 2 and dropped only three single shot ends second half.
Bill reports that Joanna was a bit long but that Heather played very
well in taking the jack through to those waiting woods; Carol had an
excellent match throughout.
Sylvia must have been delighted with this win against local rivals but
likewise must wonder why the side has been so inconsistent!
CONNAUGHT LADIES
v ASHILL
Connaught Ladies travelled to Ashill on Monday 20 August for their last
league match of the season. The evening was wet, cold and miserable and
a fitting commentary on a terrible summer for bowls. The match was reduced
to one of 12 ends and Connaught emerged with a comfortable victory by
45-17 and 8-0. Sylvia rewarded the winning team at Wymondham Dell with
reselection for this match and they did not let her down.
On Rink 2 Sylvia Parsons, Diana Adcock and Vera Moore won 14-5, accumulating
shots steadily and dropping only four ends.
On Rink 3 Sheila Bragg, Hazel Banks and Carol Tipton won 14-3 in a similar
sort of match. Neither side scored more than a 2 on any end and Connaught
lost only two ends.
Carol Beavers, Joanna Barnes and Heather Winup won 17-9 in another good
win despite a small wobble. Cruising at 15-2 after eight ends they mistakenly
set a short jack and dropped 3 followed by 4 on another short jack, but
won the last two ends.
Thus the season ended on a good note, with the team presumably finishing
in a reasonable top half position. As with the Men"s side, lack of commitment
led to some unavailability but things did pick up a little. Selection
is a problem with so many players of about the same standard for the
lead and 2 positions; that may be worse next year if players such as
Chris Musk and Val Sheridan become available. Carol Beavers at long last
committed to regular selection for the side and played very well; if
she maintains the enthusiasm next year she could hold down the third
skip slot

Ladies National Top Club Competition
Connaught travelled to Thorpe Rec on Saturday 2 June to
play County Arts (County Arts were hosting the Middleton Cup the same
day and the Top club match was moved to neutral territory).
Connaught lost three out of the four disciplines and the
overall shots deficit was 49-77
Heather Winup was sounded out for the graveyard Singles
spot and to her credit volunteered to have a go. She predictably lost
to a former Kent county player and by the huge margin of 2-21. She at
least prevented a whitewash by recovering from 0-19. Against somebody
who quite simply was better she reports not being too unhappy with her
play, often getting second shot and forcing her opponent to play well.
In the Pairs Sylvia Parsons and Diana Adcock had an excellent
win 19 shots to 15. The score card shows Connaught gradually pulling
ahead in a match where 1 and 2 shot ends were the order of the day. Connaught
led 16-10 after 16 ends but then had their one lapse when dropping 4
on end 17 and finding themselves facing possible disappointment.
However, Sylvia and Diana are both experienced and competitive under
pressure and won 3 out of the last 4 ends to clinch victory.
In the Triples Sheila Bragg, Margaret Goode and Carol Tipton,
along with Sylvia and Diana, looked Connaught's likeliest bet for a winning
combination. That view was soon overturned when Connaught steadily dropped
shots to be 1-11 down after 7 ends. A storming middle session then
saw Connaught crush their opponents to lead 17-14 after 15 ends; a 4
on end 8 and a 5 on end 13 were particular blows. County Arts held their
nerve, however, to come back with 1, 1 and 2 over the last three ends. For
the neutral this must have been a terrific match, but Connaught
naturally would have been disappointed at hot holding on.
In the Fours Chris Taylor, Mary Fallows, Hazel Banks and
Vera Moore lost 11-23. If we take away 3 x 4s conceded to County Arts,
the match was even and with low-scoring ends. However, those three bad
ends of course were crucial. The same four were to lose by a very similar
margin a few days later to Swaffham in the Breckland League and they
are not clicking at present.
Coronation Triples
Friendly Matches
Ladies National and County Championships
A Ladies Four comprising Sheila Bragg (skip), Diana Adcock
(lead, Vera Moore (2) and Sylvia Parsons (3) has progressed well in the
county championships by winning at Great Yarmouth and then at Thetford
against strong opposition. The Four continued to do well and reached
the semi-final at R G Carter on Thursday 12 July where they faced a rink
from Norfolk BC. In an apparently poor-quality match all round their
form deserted them and a tremendous run had ended.
On Saturday evening 2 June Sheila Bragg travelled to Norfolk
Bowling Club to play Brenda Whitehead in the champion of champions. Brenda
Whitehead, mother of Lynne, is a renowned player in her own right with
various county and national titles to her credit. Sheila won by 21-16
in what must be one of the best individual wins by a Connaught player.
Sheila, of course, had played in a tough Top Club earlier that day and
only she would have contemplated taking on this match in addition. Her
own self-belief obviously served her very well! However, Sheila lost
her next match by 17-21 at home to a lady from Downham Market who was
somewhat disparaging of Heather Winup's marking!
Sheila Bragg and Margaret Goode had a sizeable win away
to Yarmouth opposition in the county pairs on Sunday 10 June and continued
their progress a few days later with victory away at Norfolk Bowling
Club. Sheila and Margaret won their next match, but details are not available.
They eventually reached the finals day at R G Carter on Thursday 12 July
and won their morning semi-final. Sadly, they lost the final by 1 shot
after a splendid run in the competition.
NOTE FROM WEBSITE REPORTER - the above were all tremendous
club performances but I cannot do them full justice if I am not
given information
MIXED OUTDOOR BOWLS (EXTERNAL LEAGUES & COMPETITIONS) 2007
Ashill League
Quick Link to > > > Ashill "A" .. Ashill "B" .. Ashill "C" .. Ashill "D" .. Competitions
and Cups
Ashill 'A'
Connaught again field four sides in the Ashill Mixed Triples
League. Connaught 'A', captain Sheila Bragg, and Connaught 'B, captain
Alan Sparrow, again vie with each other in Division 1. Connaught 'D',
captain Alan Marshall, move up to Division 3 after last season's promotion
and Connaught 'C', captain Alison Rush, remain in Division 4. All four
squads are fairly slim in size and other club members undoubtedly will
be called upon from time to time. For various reasons, especially given
the strength of Division 1 and the horse-trading with Connaught 'A' about
squad make-up, Connaught 'B' may struggle the most.
Connaught "A" V Ashill Away
Connaught 'A' travelled to Ashill to play the title holders in their
first match on Tuesday 15 May. In a good start they won by 48 shots to
44 and by 6 points to 2. Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock and Sylvia Parsons
had an excellent win by 20-9, aided by a 7 on end 3 and a 5 on end 10;
the Ashill League often throws up these large-scoring ends. Sheila Bragg,
Mike Parsons and Russell Hales formed a new combination and went down
10-20, not surprisingly given that Sheila and Russell had just returned
from two weeks holiday and had not previously played outside. In what
proved a key match, Ray Wells, Hazel Banks and Keith Banks won by 18-15,
a 5 on end 13 giving them a 14-12 lead and determined play maintaining
it.
Connaught 'A' did not play the scheduled match at home
to Thetford 'B' on Tuesday 22 May as the opposition could not raise a
side. The match has been rearranged for August (do the rules of this
league need stiffening?)
Connaught "A" V Thetford 'A' Home
Connaught 'A' Beat Thetford 'A' at home on Tuesday 5 June by 55-54 and
6-2.
Ray Wells, Keith Banks and Carol Tipton won 18-15, but
after leading 15-7 on end 11 were reduced to 16-15 after sixteen ends;
they held their nerve for single shot wins on ends 17 and 18.
Lee Fallows, Hazel Banks and Derek Liles were in a close
match throughout with the score 15-15 after sixteen ends. Thetford played
well to get 2 x 2s and Connaught lost 15-19.
Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock and Sylvia Parsons won 22-20
in a match of twists and turns. Connaught scored 1 x 4 and 1 x 7, while
Thetford had 1 x 5 and 1 x 6!
Over the last two ends Thetford scored 15 shots to 2 and
made a comfortable Connaught position a rather fraught one.
Connaught "A" V Swaffham 'A' Away
Connaught 'A' travelled to Swaffham 'A' on Tuesday 12 June and had a
good win by 70-42 and 6-2
Bill Adcock, Derek Liles and Sylvia Parsons had a rather
torrid time in losing 12-24. Dropping 5s on ends 4 and 6 and a 4 on end
15 did not help their cause.
Sheila Bragg, Mike Parsons and Russell Hales won well by
24-11. 1-5 down after four ends, they had an inspired spell to lead 17-6
after twelve ends and had plenty in hand at the finish.
Ray Wells, Hazel Banks and Keith Banks had a walking on
water evening as they demolished their opponents 34-7. 7 shots on end
4, 6 on end 12, 5 on end 15 and 4 on end 16, as well as 2 x 3s early
on, tell their own story
Connaught "A" V Aldiss Park Away
Connaught travelled to Alldiss Park, Dereham, on Thursday 21 June
for a rearranged match and lost 45-53 and 2-6.
Sheila Bragg, Keith Banks and Russell Hales went down 10-17
in a low-scoring match. Leading 4-3 after four ends they then lost their
way to be 4-12 down after ten ends. They achieved parity after that but
could not break through.
Ray Wells, Hazel Banks and Carol Tipton started well
and led 7-3 after five ends. After twelve ends they were 7-24 down; in
this dreadful spell they dropped 5 on end 7 and 6 on end 12. The final
deficit was 11-27.
Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock and Sylvia Parsons provided the
one bright spot in winning 24-9. They conceded very little to their opponents,
who were contained to 7 x1 and 1 x 2, and amassed 1 x5 and 2 x 4 on their
way to victory.
All in all this was an uninspired performance against
opponents to be met in the Jermy Cup on 24 June.
Connaught "A" V Connaught 'B' Home
Connaught 'A' then were "at home" to Connaught 'B' in a derby match on
Tuesday 26 June. Connaught 'A' lost 39-42 and 2-6 in an extremely close
contest in which all three matches went to the wire.
On Rink 4 Bill Adcock, Diana Adcock and Keith Banks won
13-12 against Ivor Moore, Heather Winup and Vera Moore, just edging out
the opposition with a single shot on the last end. There was a good contest
at lead with Heather holding her own against Diana. Keith and Vera both
had wayward shots on occasion but generally played well in cancelling
